what
In Europe, most environmental organizations and grassroots movements are white and middle class. Long-standing racist policies and practices – such as residential segregation, unequal opportunities, and limited prospects for economic advancement – have led to increased vulnerability of BIPOC to climate change impacts, exclusion from circles of decision making and governance in their communities, and by extension other global crises that may emerge, the latest being COVID19.
We want to create spaces of knowledge and skills exchange, connecting and bridging the gap between these two worlds, through Anti-racism work and sustainability education (Because of covid19 and the budget, this part of the project is temporarily suspended). We plan to roll out and develop already existing training with leaders and core team members of these organisations and support them to develop strategies of creating diversity, equity and inclusion working groups to make sure it is safe and welcoming for the BIPOC to work and collaborate with them.
The project has a clear target group
Environmental, social, grassroots organisations and groups ready to train their peers on Anti-Racism and to become a diverse and inclusive group.
BIPOC (Black,Indigenous and People of Colour includes immigrants of Color , refugees and Roma and Sinti communities) ready to receive support training for the healing process from negative impacts caused by everyday experiences of racism, microaggressions and internalised oppression.
Promoting anti-racism education for organisations and leaders
Racism is harmful to all parts of societies in many different aspects. Anti-racism education is needed because systemic racism in the environmental, social, and grassroots movements also results in the marginalisation of BlPOC expertise including scientists, indigenous knowledge (e.g. Sami people from North Europe) as European perspectives are generally supported, prioritized and magnified. BIPOC experts face the additional burdens of operation within racist structures while also trying to address the issues at hand i.e climate change activists. The climate, social, and grassroots movements simply do not have a good track record of handling issues of equity.
Supporting BIPOC in acquiring and developing skills and key competences in Anti-Racism Work and Healing Racism Trauma
Most of the anti-racism work is left at the hands of the BIPOC, including first or second-generation immigrants, refugees, and the Roma and Sinti Communities. Considering that, we want to improve and extend the supply of high learning opportunities tailored to the needs of BIPOC. We want to develop the competences
of BIPOC, strengthen the link between them and environmental and grassroots organisations, and improve the quality of their work on Anti-racism. We want to offer a comprehensive, highly practical course for BIPOC which teaches skills, competencies, and mindset needed for success in their anti-racism work. We believe that the level of education on leading an anti-racism fight is very important for successful anti-racism initiatives, which could revive social and ecological development. In addition, we want to support the BIPOC with tools and skills for their healing processes of intergenerational trauma caused by racism, inner oppressions, and creating sustainable lifestyles and resilient communities, whilst advocating for climate change and human rights.
